Police have issued “maximum resource” orders in response to an unexplained incident in which at least 21 youths died in a South African bar. Four other minors are in critical condition.
The young people between the ages of 13 and 17 – on Sunday there were 18 to 20-year-olds – were found lifeless early Sunday morning in a small tavern in the city of East London. The cause of death remained a mystery until Monday. A forensic investigation has been launched.
According to the emergency services, the bodies were found slumped on armchairs, sofas and the dance floor with no visible wounds. Initially, the police suspected mass panic as the background. This has since been ruled out as a cause of death. There is also speculation about gas poisoning or another form of poisoning.
“It’s hard to believe this is the case, as there are no open wounds in the dead,” said an official. President Cyril Ramaphosa called the incident a “tragedy”. According to media reports, the young people had celebrated a birthday and the start of the holiday.
