A 55-year-old woman from Butler, Pennsylvania, was attacked by a bear while walking her dog. Lee Ann Galante thought her final hour had come, but thanks to her dog, she is still alive.
At the hospital bed, the woman talked about the traumatic experience: she was suddenly knocked to the ground, bitten and scratched by a black bear. “I really thought that was it,” said the still-shocked woman. The 55-year-old continued to report that she was screaming at the top of her lungs and hoping help would come.
Dog as a lifesaver?
In the end, it was probably her dog who distracted the mother bear for a moment and gave Galante the opportunity to escape into the house.
Mother bear euthanized
Miraculously, the woman escaped without life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the mother bear has been euthanized by game wardens and her three cubs will now have to fend for themselves.
