The dirtiest places – Air pollution: when breathing becomes dangerous

Date:

Breathing clean air: this privilege is reserved for only a few people. According to the WHO, 91 percent of the world’s population lives in places where air quality exceeds recommended limits – which has serious consequences. Krone+ tells you which countries and cities have the worst air pollution and where in Austria you can still take a deep breath with a clear conscience.

When you hear air pollution, you usually have images of large Asian cities in your head where people can barely see, let alone breathe, because of the smog. It was only a few weeks ago that the governor of the Thai capital Bangkok asked the more than eight million residents of the metropolis to work from home, after particularly dangerous particulate matter levels exceeded the official WHO limits fifteen times. In Thailand alone, at least two million people had to seek medical attention last year due to severe air pollution.
