Cut by anchor – Cargo ship that sank off Yemen severed submarine cable

Date:

The cargo ship Rubymar, which almost completely sank in the Gulf of Aden after an attack by Houthi rebels, probably cut a submarine cable with its anchor, according to American information. The US Department of Defense announced this on Thursday.

The missile attack forced the ship’s crew to drop anchor, the Pentagon said. According to current knowledge, the anchor dragging on the ground “probably” cut a submarine cable that runs under the Red Sea and provides internet and telecommunications services worldwide.

Huge oil spill, environmental disaster looms
The cargo ship Rubymar, loaded with 21,000 tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, was attacked with missiles by the Houthis in the Gulf of Aden on February 18. The crew abandoned the cargo ship after two hits and reached safety. Since then, a huge oil slick has leaked from the ship.

The Iran-backed Islamist Houthi militia has stepped up its attacks on ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since the war between Israel and the radical Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas began in October. That is why many shipping companies are now avoiding the important maritime trade route.

In response to Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes, the British and American militaries have launched waves of attacks on rebel-held areas in Yemen in recent weeks. Two weeks ago, the EU also launched its military operation against the Houthi attacks.
