Three Slovaks were making a deep snow descent on the Mölltal Glacier in Carinthia on Friday when a piece of snow suddenly broke loose – with dramatic consequences.
The accident started at 9:45 am during the descent from 2,700 meters above sea level. “A piece of snow came loose and a ski was lost. “The three Slovaks – one 24-year-old and two 27-year-olds – tried to locate it using an avalanche probe,” police said. “But then another unknown winter sports enthusiast released a 50-meter-wide snow sheet above the searchers.”
Caught and buried by an avalanche
The three Slovak citizens were caught in the avalanche and buried. “The 24-year-old was fully buried, fortunately the two men were only partially buried. “They were able to free themselves,” police said. “The woman’s foot was still sticking out of the snow mass.” Her companions and witnesses who had arrived immediately dug her out. All three winter sports enthusiasts miraculously remained unharmed.
