The egg museum in Winden am See resembles a gigantic glass display case embedded in a rural idyll. There are 4,000 eggs from all cultures, eras and continents. The museum even won the Burgenland State Architecture Prize.
One of the four water mills, built in 1856, stood at the foot of the Leitha Mountains in Winden am See. Wander Bertoni, one of Europe’s most renowned sculptors, acquired it in 1965 and began expanding it because his studio in Grinzing had become too small. Thus, a special kind of art venue was created on the old cultural soil: the Wander Bertoni open-air museum. During the renovation, his wife Waltraut Bertoni was always by his side. “The love for art brought us together and led us to this inspiring place,” says the now 83-year-old.
