For 24 hours, German train drivers announce the next warning strike

Date:

The German Locomotive Union has called for another warning strike in the collective labor agreement negotiations dispute with Deutsche Bahn. From 2 a.m. on Tuesday, extensive restrictions will again apply to long-distance, regional and freight transport for 24 hours, the association announced on Sunday evening. The freight transport strike starts next Monday at 6 p.m. and ends on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Since the railway company GDL has not submitted a new offer since January 19, “this will inevitably lead to industrial action”, the report said. Just last week, millions of commuters were affected by the GDL’s fifth strike in the current collective bargaining round. Dissatisfaction about this is growing within the business community and politics.

Isnzern invites you to negotiate
Deutsche Bahn announced earlier on Sunday that it would invite the GDL again for collective labor agreement negotiations on Monday. “We are convinced that we can only reach an agreement through dialogue at the negotiating table,” said Human Resources Director Martin Seiler. Switching to a written exchange of offers and replies at this very advanced stage of the negotiations would not be productive. On Friday, the GDL asked DB to submit a written offer before 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Union notes ‘refusal to work’ at Bahn
The GDL explained in the evening that the railway continued the provocation and inevitably forced the GDL to continue the dispute, to the annoyance of DB customers. “The GDL agreement proposals have been on the table at the DB since January 23, 2024 and the board has nothing better to do than refuse to work.” Instead of submitting a written offer and finding feasible solutions with the GDL in the context of collective bargaining, “The PR campaign will continue to pretend that the GDL is unwilling to compromise.”

36-Shourly week with full wage compensation required
The railway had previously stated that it had repeatedly agreed in recent days to conclude negotiations based on the overall package proposed by the moderators. This also includes a 36-hour working week with full salary compensation. If the GDL does not want to take this route, the DB is also prepared to enter into formal arbitration.

The latest strike only ended on Friday
The latest strike by the machinists’ union ended Friday afternoon. From 2 a.m. on Thursday, train drivers paralyzed large parts of local and long-distance transport across Germany. The connections between Germany and Austria were also affected. There has been no freight traffic since Wednesday evening. GDL boss Claus Weselsky said on Deutschlandfunk that future strikes would only be announced at short notice, and no longer 48 hours in advance as before.
