Continuing bottlenecks – US flies in more baby food from abroad

Date:

The government in Washington is allowing more formula for babies from abroad due to persistent bottlenecks. US President Biden announced flights from London and Melbourne on Wednesday to bring baby food from Kendamil (UK) and Bubs (Australia) to various locations in the US.

During a video call with infant formula manufacturers on Wednesday, Biden said, “There is nothing more disturbing than the feeling of not getting what your child needs.” He instructed his government to “use all available means to increase supply”. Baby food should be on the supermarket shelves as soon as possible.

Last month, the Biden administration had already arranged two baby food flights over the US Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. The background to the bottlenecks is the failure of a factory of Abbott, the largest manufacturer of infant formula in the US.

Abbott recalled several product lines after four babies became ill and two died, possibly due to bacterial contamination. Production at one of the company’s factories in the state of Michigan was temporarily halted in February.

Bottlenecks declared a top priority
Biden has declared the bottlenecks a top priority and, among other things, activated a war law to boost production. In addition, in May, Biden launched “Operation Fly Formula” (roughly: “Operation Fly Baby Food”) to bring supplies from abroad to the United States.
