Massive rockfall – shore road on Lake Garda open again from Thursday

Date:

Clean-up work started on Monday after a massive rock fall on Lake Garda. As reported, a rock of approximately 20 cubic meters came loose between Riva del Garda and Limone on Friday evening. The river road is expected to be open to traffic again from Thursday.

The western shore road on Lake Garda in Italy is currently affected. On Friday evening, large pieces of rock fell onto the road along the lake. Some cars parked along the side of the road were damaged. Because there were no people on site at the time of the incident, no one was injured. As a precaution, an adjacent home was evacuated.

Here you can see photos of the rockfall last weekend.

Local inspection by helicopter
Civil protection carried out a local inspection by helicopter on Saturday. The road was then temporarily closed for safety reasons. A specialist company is now responsible for blasting the rock and clearing the slope and road. To ensure that people can still get to Limone on Thursday, extra boat connections have been created.

Alternating between freezing and thawing
After heavy rainfall, landslides are not uncommon in the Lake Garda area. Geologists observe rock movements using engineering instruments. The “Gardesana occidentale” had to be closed again and again in recent months due to falling rocks, once in mid-December and another time in early January (see video above). The alternation between frost and thaw and the heavy rain of recent weeks are said to have washed the rocks free.
