A man was hit by gunfire at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin on Sunday evening. Rescue attempts failed and the 44-year-old died in hospital.
The victim was walking along Zimmerstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg when shots were suddenly fired, police said on Monday. The man was hit several times and collapsed on the sidewalk.
Passers-by alerted rescuers and police. The 44-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance, but resuscitation measures did not help and the man died from his injuries. A hit squad took over the investigation.
