An amateur filmmaker and student pilot took a remarkable photo in Canada. While he was filming the departure of an Air Canada plane from Vancouver airport, lightning struck the plane. The vehicle suffered no damage.
When watching this video, most viewers will probably be very relieved that they weren’t there. Even if there is no damage or injuries during the incident, you do not want to experience a lightning strike on an airplane during a flight.
Student pilot Ethan West observed such a rare sight from the ground: he also had his camera trained on the Boeing 777-300ER taking off from Vancouver. According to broadcaster CBC, the aircraft is one of the favorite aircraft of the plane spotter, who regularly observes the take-offs and landings.
You can watch the video of the lightning strike here:
Air Canada confirmed the plane was struck by lightning in mid-air on Sunday. When the aircraft landed at Heathrow it was inspected and returned to service straight away.
Every aircraft is checked after a lightning strike
The airline said planes are built to withstand lightning strikes. However, to be on the safe side, checks are carried out after such an incident.
As the National Weather Service reported, commercial airplanes are struck by lightning once or twice a year. West was in the right place at exactly the right time: “As far as I know there was no lightning in the weather forecast, so it kind of came out of the sky,” said the amateur filmmaker.
