The US House of Representatives has passed a bill that could lead to a ban on the popular video platform TikTok in the US. The proposal is intended to force parent company Bytedance to sell the app – otherwise it will be blocked.
According to the draft, the company has 180 days to sell TikTok. Bytedance is suspected of giving the Chinese Communist Party access to user data. The legislative initiative was supported in the House of Representatives in a rare act of bipartisan unity by both the dominant opposition Republicans there and President Joe Biden’s Democrats. 325 MPs voted in favor and 65 against.
Justice can still fail
However, the approval required by the Senate – the other chamber of Congress – is also uncertain. Some influential senators have spoken out against the bill. Republican former President Donald Trump also opposed a TikTok ban this week.
However, the White House has already announced that Biden will sign the bill when it is passed by both chambers of Congress and will therefore go into effect. Beijing criticized the proposed law on Wednesday as “bullying behavior” and vaguely warned that the measure would “inevitably cause more trouble for the United States.”
Facebook fell
TikTok has long since overtaken Facebook and Instagram in terms of usage times. TikTok has over a billion users worldwide.
