He became European champion with the Netherlands in 1988, was a world star at AC Milan, became a world footballer in 1992 – Marco van Basten is one of the greatest Dutch legends. “Krone” expert Andreas Herzog met the 59-year-old for a major interview and talked to him about the European Championships in Germany and Austria.
“Kron”: Marco, you can look back on a dream career. You won everything and are revered as a legend in Amsterdam and Milan. For me you are one of the best strikers of all time. How has football changed since the 80s and 90s?
Marco van Basten: Well, everything is faster and more dynamic, but back then we could just as well play football. But in the past, there were only two or three top players at the big clubs who took charge on the field in difficult situations. Today they are waiting for the trainers’ instructions.”
