Flight Control – US: Negative Entry Test Still Needed

Date:

The US government is sticking to mandatory coronavirus testing for travelers from abroad, regardless of their vaccination status. “We are continuously reviewing our policies, but the requirement to be tested before departure remains in effect as it stands,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said. Regulatory changes would be made solely at the discretion of health and medical experts.

The US travel industry is calling for an end to mandatory testing for fully vaccinated air travelers. A letter last month from airlines, airports, hotel chains, associations and industry companies to the White House coronavirus coordinator said economic losses from the measure were significant. It was also pointed out that there is no mandatory testing at the land borders with Canada and Mexico.

Travelers to US destinations must be tested the day before their international flight and may only board with a negative result. The test requirement applies regardless of vaccination status and applies to both foreigners and Americans. Excluded are people who have just recovered from Covid-19 and can show a letter from a doctor or health authority. For flights within the US, on the other hand, there is no longer a testing requirement and there is no longer a requirement to wear a mask, according to a federal court ruling.
