After the one-day strike by the train drivers’ union GDL, Deutsche Bahn is back on the road with a normal timetable (see video above). Traffic was steady Wednesday morning, a company spokesman said.
Passengers should prepare for packed trains this Wednesday as many people would catch up on their journeys. The usual timetable now applies again for long-distance, regional and S-Bahn transport. Tuesday’s strike also led to several cancellations in Austria, for example the ÖBB’s Railjet Vienna-Munich connections. As reported, the union was on strike on passenger transport from Tuesday night to 2 a.m. on Wednesday. Freight transport work was stopped on Monday evening.
The sixth strike in the fare dispute with Deutsche Bahn led to significant restrictions for passengers, but also for the group’s industrial customers. The company failed to halt the strike through a court order on Monday and Tuesday.
Next strike at Easter?
Trade union GDL is fighting for higher salaries and fewer working hours at the railways. According to her, shift workers would only have to work 35 hours a week in the future instead of the current 38 hours for the same money. Instead, Deutsche Bahn proposed reducing working hours in two steps to 36 hours per week by 2028. The GDL rejected this and also broke off the talks.
It was said that further strikes would no longer be announced 48 hours before the start, but rather at shorter notice. Strikes around Easter cannot be ruled out either.
