Side swipe at Musk? – Obama: It’s better to protect Earth than colonize Mars

Date:

Former US President Barack Obama has called on people to do more to protect the Earth instead of colonizing the planet Mars. At a conference on sustainable energy in Paris on Wednesday, Obama spoke about major Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who are building spaceships that can take people to Mars.

“But when I hear some of them talking about plans to colonize Mars because conditions on Earth could deteriorate to the point where the planet becomes uninhabitable, I look at them like, ‘What are you talking about?'” Obama said . “Even after a nuclear war, Earth would be more habitable than Mars. Even if we did nothing about climate change, there would be oxygen – unlike on Mars, as far as we know.”

Obama: “We were made for this place”
“We must invest in taking care of this planet,” the former president said. Space exploration should be more about acquiring new knowledge and making discoveries than about finding a new living environment for people. “We were made for this place, and we must preserve this place so it remains livable,” Obama said.

With his comments, the former president may have mainly targeted high-tech billionaire Elon Musk, the head of electric car manufacturer Tesla and space company SpaceX. According to Musk’s vision, SpaceX’s rockets will take people to Mars in the future.
