Two foreign tourists have died in an accident on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali. A wooden house in Jatiluwih village was hit by a landslide after heavy rain on Thursday morning, a disaster management agency official said. The holidaymakers were buried in their sleep. “There were two victims in one bed, a man and a woman,” the officer said.
The 47-year-old woman was from Australia, but lived in the US. According to authorities, the nationality of her male companion was initially unclear. The bodies of the victims were taken to a hospital in the provincial capital Denpasar. According to the official, the rain had damaged the canals used for irrigation above the villa, thus causing the landslide.
Deforestation contributes to landslides
In Indonesia, floods and landslides are common during the rainy season, which began in late November on the archipelago’s roughly 17,000 islands. The problem has been exacerbated in some places due to deforestation. Last week, at least 27 people were killed in floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra due to heavy rains.
