The Provincial Council of Bizkaia has approved the Comprehensive Waste Prevention and Management Plan for Local Competence (PIPGRB 2030), which sets the guidelines related to this management for the current decade and sets as its main objectives the reduction of waste generation by 15%. recovering 4.9 out of every 5 kilos of kilos produced by 2030. In the press conference after the Government Council, the regional spokesperson, Leixuri Arrizabalaga, announced that the regional institution has sent the text to the General Assemblies for processing and approval, a step before the entry into force of this document, which lays the foundation for waste management in the current decade.

This document highlights as priority objectives the reduction of waste production by 15% and the recovery of 4.9 of every 5 kilos of waste produced, of which 4 kilos will be reintroduced into the production chain and another 0.9 kilos will be used for the production of waste. renewable energy.

The plan aims for Bizkaia to materially recover 79.83% of its waste (reuse and/or recycle 74.19% and compost 5.64%), energetically recover 17.68% and allocate it for final disposal once that waste is 2.49% have been treated.

Other targets of the plan include a 20% reduction compared to 2019 in the production of light packaging waste; improve reuse readiness rate by 20%; ensure 100% coverage of the selective collection of household hazardous waste, textiles, cooking oil, bulky waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE); and separate collection of bio-waste in municipalities. The objectives have also been set to reduce the percentage of energetic waste to less than 20% and to set the landfill percentage of municipal waste (treated and untreated) at 2.49%; integrate the information and innovative ideas of citizens and economic actors in a digitalized and collaborative environment, which allows the generation of tools and levers for the continuous improvement of the waste management system. territory and ensure its economic and environmental sustainability in collaboration with municipal councils and associations.
