In addition to the acute shortage of lifeguard staff, new water supply rules could also spoil the summer season in Italy.
The lido operators are angry. From the summer onwards, swimmers must be guaranteed to be able to shower with drinking water, also at sea and in swimming pools. However, in many places there is currently no connection to the water network; the showers are fed with water from wells. Operators now fear significant additional costs and warn that hotels and holiday apartments could remain dry in the summer.
Operators are fighting the regulations
Bottlenecks in supply, especially in the hot summer months, would pose a real danger, warns the trade association Confesercenti, which represents many seaside resort operators. Those in Tuscany have asked the regional parliament to withdraw the new regulations.
Severe penalties loom
Anyone who does not comply with the new regulations risks high fines and even closure. The operators of the bathing establishments now want to challenge the measure in court.
