Children under the age of 14 should be sent to prison after committing serious crimes; this is what State Secretary for Youth Claudia Plakolm is advocating. In an interview with the “Krone” she explains why a lowering of the age of criminal responsibility is urgently needed. A social worker responds. After the gang rapes in Vienna and Salzburg and the individual act of a Carinthian teenager, politics and the judiciary are in demand. Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP), the Austrian State Secretary for Youth from Walding, follows a clear line. And her demands are against social workers, therapists and the President of the Supreme Court, Georg Kodek.
“Kron”: Ms Plakolm, is the willingness of young people to use violence getting worse or has it always existed and are we only now noticing it more?
Claudia Plakolm: The statistics clearly show that the acts themselves are getting worse. Overall, we are talking about more crimes like rape and murder and increasing violence among young people. There are also more repeat offenders. In other words: young criminals who have already committed dozens of crimes. It is unbelievable that we have no legal recourse and currently have to stand by and do nothing.
