Against excessive alcohol consumption – Lignano even bans watermelons on Pentecost

Date:

The popular Italian holiday resort of Lignano is preparing for the expected strong influx of young people for the Whitsun weekend. To prevent the feared excess of alcohol, there are fairly strict rules. In addition to a ban on drinks in glass bottles and cans, no watermelons can be sold – penalties of up to 5,000 euros are threatened.

The Italian-Friulian seaside resort, which is popular with Austrians, has not had a good experience with the party crowd on Whitsun in recent years. Mayor Luca Fanotto therefore explained that drinks in glass bottles or cans should not be sold on weekends.

In addition, bars are only allowed to serve drinks in plastic or cardboard cups.

Fine up to 5000 euros
It is not allowed to drink alcoholic beverages outside the premises. The operators were also asked to lower the music volume. Violations of the regulation are punished with administrative fines between 500 and 5000 euros.

Even flower beds have been deposited
The sale of watermelons is also prohibited. This is justified by the fact that groups of young people would have liked to eat the refreshing fruit while enjoying loud music and alcohol and that the city center was polluted as a result.

The mayor wants to prevent similar incidents this year. Fountains and flowerbeds in the center were also cordoned off to prevent damage, local media reported.

Lignano getting ready
In addition, the number of security forces patrolling the city this weekend will be increased. Checks on the beach are tightened, especially at night. German-speaking police officers from Tramin in South Tyrol and from Carinthia should also be deployed.

More than 80,000 tourists are expected in Lignano during the Whitsun weekend, of which 20,000 are from Austria. After two years of pandemic, there are no more restrictions in the popular Adriatic resort. A lot of traffic on roads and highways is therefore expected in Friuli.

A lot of traffic expected
The local motorway operator “Autovie Venete” advises Whitsun holidaymakers from Austria and Germany to be “extremely careful” on the A23 (Udine-Palmanova) and A4 (Venice-Trieste) motorways. There was already heavy traffic on Thursday, a public holiday in Italy (Republic Day). An above-average amount of traffic is also expected on the highways in Friuli and Veneto in the coming days.
