In Bangladesh, an imprisoned executioner has been released after executing 26 fellow prisoners. Shahjahan Bhuiyan was imprisoned for murder 32 years ago. According to his own statement, he was “respected” there and said to have had “a good time”.
In Bangladesh, all executioners are long-time prisoners who, like Bhuiyan, are selected and trained. The convicted killer had touted his tie-handling skills earlier in his time in prison. “His sentence was reduced for carrying out a hanging,” said deputy head of Dhaka Central Jail, Tania Zaman.
Authorities said Bhuiyan executed 26 people. Among them were several murderers and putschists. For example, some were convicted of plotting a coup in 1975 and killing the country’s founder, the father of current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “The authorities took care of my comfort and showed me recognition,” the convicted executioner told journalists. He was released from prison on Sunday after saying he had “a good time”.
2000 people sentenced to death
More than 2,000 people are currently on death row in Bangladesh, including hundreds of Islamist extremists, according to human rights groups. Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world where executions by hanging are still carried out.
