Goodbye snow – a Finnish snowboarding couple almost hurt themselves badly on Krippenstein. The two of them had already driven around there two months ago, but there was still plenty of white splendor. They got stuck on the descent, then had to give up due to a lack of snow and were rescued by helicopter.
A 34-year-old woman and her husband of the same age, both Finnish citizens, suffered a mountain emergency in the Dachstein Krippenstein ski area on Sunday afternoon. The two of them had taken the Dachstein Südwandbahn gondola lift from Ramsau am Dachstein to the Hunerkogel in the morning. From there they walked or rode with their splitboards along the ski tour markers over the Dachstein Plateau to Krippenstein in Obertraun.
I was there two months ago
The two were already familiar with the freeride offering at Krippenstein from a previous holiday about two months ago. The couple therefore wanted to descend into the valley via the ‘Angeralm’ option again this time. However, because there was much less snow that day than in January, the descent for the Finns was different than normal. The two of them looked over the exit of the variant due to the lack of or difficult to recognize departure lanes and drove too far downhill into the terrain.
Descent was no longer possible
Due to the lack of snow, the two had to take off their snowboards and try to make their way towards the valley on foot. However, in the increasingly steep terrain, near a waterfall, the athletes had to realize that a further descent was no longer possible and the return journey on foot would take a lot of time and energy.
Emergency call made
That’s why they called the emergency number of the Krippenstein cable car with their mobile phone around 3:30 p.m. The emergency was forwarded to the Gmunden Alpine Police and the Obertraun Mountain Rescue Service. The air police helicopter, Libelle Sierra, was called in to carry out the rescue. The crew was able to pick up the two well-equipped winter sports enthusiasts with a rescue rope and fly them into the valley unharmed.
