Too many incidents – Steyregg wants to close youth asylum accommodations

Date:

After the incidents in an asylum seeker house in Steyregger for minors, Mayor Gerhard Hintringer convened a safety summit. If it suits him, the number of informal caregivers should initially be increased if there are fewer residents, but in the long term they would like to see the entire house vacated.

As the “Krone” reported, numerous incidents had occurred in the home of minor refugees; the fire alarm had gone off more than ten times in error. The final straw came when female volunteers from the Steyregger fire brigade reported being harassed by residents on December 27 while extinguishing a burning rubbish bin.

The community wants dissolution
Mayor Gerhard Hintringer (SPÖ) wants fewer residents to be accompanied by more caregivers in the home for the time being – eventually the accommodation will have to be abandoned completely.

However, the last word is spoken at the federal level, namely by the operator of the home, the Federal Care Agency (BBU).

Big summit on Thursday
Their director, Andreas Achreiner, will travel to Steyregg especially for the meeting on Thursday, January 11. “We have no plans to close the facility,” said BBU spokesman Thomas Fussenegger. “We are trying to find an amicable solution and relieve Steyregg.”

The mayor and the two deputy mayors will also be present. Representatives of the Steyregg volunteer fire brigade and the district police are also invited.

The number of inhabitants has already decreased
The BBU has already drawn the first conclusions from the incidents: 15 residents have already moved to other homes, including the likely cause of the false alarms.

There are now only 79 young people living in the institution; no incidents have occurred since the last false alarm on December 28.

Legal aftermath
The events of December 27 will also have legal consequences: some complaints have been filed with the Linz Public Prosecutor’s Office about obstruction of emergency services. However, it is questionable whether a conviction will follow for this minor offense.
