The perpetrators broke into the unlocked stable area of a pig farm in Großklein (Leibnitz district) from Sunday to Monday between 7 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. They disabled the ventilation alarm system and then used a wooden slat to block the fan in the exhaust pipe for stable ventilation.
Survival of other animals uncertain
When the farmer came by in the morning, he made the terrible discovery that 45 pigs had died of pain due to overheating. It is currently unknown whether the remaining 24 animals will survive. According to the police, the official veterinarian has been called in and the investigation is ongoing.
