Hope and fear: In Molln in Upper Austria there has been a breakthrough at a depth of 1,500 meters – and according to the company behind it a “historic gas discovery”. A local inspection and what the gas drilling boss says about the next drilling location and how much of the gas produced is likely to stay in Austria.
We drive into the Jaidhaus, at the end of the Krummen Steyerling Valley. Pure nature as far as the eye can see. About twelve kilometers from Molln we come across an “exclusion zone”. Natural gas is drilled here on an area of approximately 8,000 square meters. On Sunday evening, the exploration company ADX reported: Gas found – at a depth of about 1,500 meters.
ADX CEO Ian Tchacos spoke of a “historic find” and a “gas source” that “must be developed for Austria”. It is hoped for 24 billion cubic meters of gas – that is three times the amount that Austria consumes per year.
Despite the criticism that Australian company ADX has faced since drilling began about two months ago, the ‘crown’ has been welcomed with open hands. There are no restrictions, we are allowed to take photos, even aerial photos with a drone. And Tim Stoll, the operations manager, and ADX boss Alain Reingruber (see also interview below) are happy to provide us with information.
