A serious carbon monoxide accident occurred during construction work in Vienna-Ottakring on Thursday morning. A total of seven workers were injured.
The men, aged between 16 and 57, were laying a floor in the Effingergasse shortly before 8:45 a.m. and probably used a petrol-filled machine in an unventilated room. The emergency call came in after several people complained of dizziness and headaches.
Employees fled the room
When the first rescue teams arrived, all those affected had already fled the smoke-filled room. Carbon monoxide poisoning was diagnosed in the seven men. Six of them complained of various symptoms ranging from mild malaise, headache and dizziness to severe shortness of breath.
All seven injured in hospital
A 39-year-old worker suffered severe carbon monoxide poisoning and was stabilized. Six of the seven were hospitalized with symptoms of poisoning of varying severity. The poisoning is believed to have been caused by the exhaust fumes of the construction equipment.
