Carlos Sainz arrived at Monza with great enthusiasm, but didn’t want to dampen expectations. The driver from Madrid came from a real run at Zandvoort, where he managed to finish 5th in a car he met himself in the Netherlands which sometimes was not even close to the Top-10. There, Ferrari suffered a lot of lack of charge and the car was not competitive. In Monza, however, on a circuit with a lot of straight lines, with a very fast car, a turn around and last year competitive, he hopes to fight for the podium against the Italian ‘tifosi’. Carlos shined last year. He started 18th having to change engines and moved up to 4th in just 13 laps with attacks that lifted the Italians from their seats. He missed the podium. He hopes to achieve this this weekend at a circuit where he is close to victory in 2020 with McLaren, this time at the wheel of a Ferrari which has made it clear that it will undergo a major change next year to fight for the success
He also appreciated in front of the Spanish press at Monza the renewal of Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes for two years, which will make him 40 as a driver for the Brackley team. If you see 40 years in F1? answered in agreement.
“If I see myself running until 40? Yes, especially with how well those in their 40s are doing (in reference to Alonso), why not? And above all, because in 10 years, those in their 30s will be we are better than those who are 40 now, which is how life works now a bit, that as the years go by, you are better and better the you are”, he commented.
“So I’ll still be (better), hopefully… it will be the ‘coconut’ that rule, also the direction of which F1 is going, in the number of races, in the number of events, in the number of appearances. we have to make, flights, the efficiency of the calendar, how are you, if you have fulfilled your dreams, if you feel fulfilled or not or feel that you still have battles to fight… it is so specific to each person . .. the best example is that of Rosberg ( he retired in 2006 after becoming champion) or the best example is Fernando Alonso (who is only 42). Everyone is doing what they want in their lives and right now I can say there are still a lot of sane people left,” he added in consideration.
ABOUT THE PREVIOUS RUMORS THAT PUT HAMILTON IN HIS SPOT AT FERRARI
“I told you at the time that I had a contract for next year. There are times when it’s not worth getting into a debate. It’s not worth it…”
FERRARI’S PERFORMANCE THIS WEEKEND
“I don’t know, I don’t make predictions anymore. I don’t play to say if we will go well or bad because this year is being so changeable and there are so many cars in a tenth, if it is decimita it falls in your favor you are in a position of podium, and if it falls against you you are out of the Top-10. It is too difficult to make predictions. I hope we will be Spa or Austria rather than Zandvoort, I hope…”
THE PODIUM
“The podium? Last year I had a podium rhythm all weekend, so this year it’s the same. It’s a circuit I’ve always liked, where I’ve always been fast. You’ve also seen it in the year of McLaren (it’s second and close to winning in 2020), so obviously I feel good in Monza. But we have to see how the car goes this year and whether it’s on the podium or not.
PERFORMANCE CHANGES FROM ONE RACE TO ANOTHER
“The good thing about this year is that on the one hand you can’t trust that in the next race you will be fine because they hit you in the nose like they hit us at Zandvoort, and then if you have a bad weekend you can pass the page because maybe the next one will go well. It’s a big change for everyone. Aston Martin comes from idle and suddenly at Zandvoort they’re running. It happens to all of us… McLaren, Mercedes, there are circuits that watch and others that don’t good. Best to keep an open mind and be ready for whatever comes this weekend.”
DID VASSEUR SAY ANYTHING TO YOU AFTER HIS RUN AT ZANDVOORT?
“This is my job. They don’t have to tell me anything because this is what I expect of me, what they expect of me and what I want to do in F1, which is get the most out of the car. So I don’ don’t expect anyone to tell me anything.”
RACE AT MONZA: HOPE OR PRESSURE?
“It’s illusion. Pressure, of course there is, especially before qualifying and the race, there is a lot of pressure, but that is at specific moments, before getting in the car. The rest of the weekend is illusion. You enjoy it, you share it with all the ‘ tifosi’, and it’s a special opportunity, to be an F1 driver and to get to race for Ferrari and to do it in Monza is a moment to enjoy and to fulfill your dream. when I’m 70 years old I’ll remember the weekends”.
FOCUS ON 2024 FERRARI
“This year there will be improvements, but we are also using the second half of the season to try to learn things and try to apply them to next year’s car, which we know has to be a big step in a different direction because it’s clear. that this year’s car is not good enough. And not only is that not good enough, it doesn’t give us a good feeling. So it’s time for changes and now in the second half it’s time to learn everything possible to apply it to next year’s car”.
