There was great concern on Sunday about a 63-year-old American in St. Anton am Arlberg: after the holidaymaker did not return to the hotel from skiing, his wife raised the alarm that evening. A major search was launched, which was complicated by unfavorable weather conditions. Then there was a big sigh of relief in the middle of the night.
The 63-year-old from the United States of America went skiing in St. Anton am Arlberg on Sunday. Because he did not return at the agreed time, the woman alerted the police through the innkeeper.
Failed search on ski route
“Officers were able to make brief contact with the man around 7 p.m. “He stated he was descending Ski Route 90 into St. Anton,” investigators said. Alpine police, mountain rescue services and fire brigades including drones then searched this route. However, there was no trace of the 63-year-old.
After repeated attempts to locate the 63-year-old, he finally succeeded in the area of the Almajur Valley, north of the ski area in the municipality of Kaisers in the Reutte district. “Because a rescue from St. Anton was not possible due to weather conditions, the Steeg mountain rescue service was informed,” the researchers continued.
“Exhausted but unharmed”
Some mountain rescuers eventually climbed from the Ausserferner side into the Almajurtal. The 63-year-old missing man was eventually able to escape around 2 a.m is located below the Bodenalpe at approximately 1,540 meters above sea level. “The man was exhausted but unharmed,” police said.
The American was taken by the emergency services to the valley to Steeg. From there he took the bus back to St. Anton on Monday morning.
