Due to the shelling on the Ukrainian side, 9,000 children have to be brought to safety from the Russian region of Belgorod, near the border. Regional Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced this on Tuesday during a meeting of the Kremlin United Russia Party in Moscow. Russia, which attacked Ukraine more than two years ago, is now being forced to make such a major evacuation. Meanwhile, Russia reported the capture of the city of Orlivka in Donetsk.
According to reports from the Russian agency, the children affected by the evacuations are children from the regional capital Belgorod and its surroundings, as well as children from the Grajvoron and Schebekino districts right on the border. On Friday, 1,200 children were to be taken to the more remote areas of Penza, Kaluga and Tambov, as well as to Stavropol in southern Russia.
Sixteen people have been killed and nearly a hundred injured in the Belgorod region since last week, the governor said. Three people were also injured by shelling on Tuesday evening.

Putin is considering a buffer zone in border areas
In the days before and during the presidential elections, Belgorod came under increasing attacks by pro-Ukrainian militias fighting on the side of Ukraine. The Russian administrative region borders the Kharkiv Oblast in Ukraine. In Moscow on Sunday evening, Russian head of state Vladimir Putin did not rule out the possibility that his troops could occupy Ukrainian border areas to form a kind of buffer zone against such attacks. He did not say how large this zone should be.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and the surrounding area are suffering from constant artillery and rocket fire from Russia, without any prior warning. During the two years of war, Ukrainian authorities repeatedly helped children and adults to leave particularly threatened places.
The Russians capture another town near Avdiivka
Russian forces have captured the city of Orlivka in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast, according to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow. Orlivka is located about ten kilometers from Avdiivka, which is under Russian control and considered strategically important. The Ukrainian General Staff previously said it had repelled nine Russian attacks near Orlivka.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the Russian military has also taken preventive action against Ukrainian saboteurs near the border with the Belgorod and Kursk regions. In both cases, the saboteurs were killed, the ministry said on Tuesday.
