Huge flames burst from a window of an apartment in Vienna-Währing on Tuesday evening. A fire may have broken out in a room while a battery was being charged. Because the house was so full of smoke, the residents had to be rescued by the Vienna Fire Department. Two people were injured in the incident.
Shortly after 2 a.m. on Tuesday, the Viennese fire brigade received an emergency call: there had been a room fire on Antonigasse in Währing. While the two apartment owners were able to escape from the burning apartment, emergency services on the scene noticed that numerous residents were standing at their windows asking for help.
The apartment door was already burned through
Because the fire spread quickly and the apartment door to the stairwell had already burned through, the fire was immediately fought with a fire extinguishing line using breathing apparatus from the stairs and a second extinguishing line from the street.
Residents had to be rescued
The smoke from the fire was then pushed out of the building. Meanwhile, firefighters moved at-risk residents from their smoke-filled apartments to safety using escape filter hoods. Two people had to be rescued using the turntable ladder. The two owners of the apartment that caught fire were taken to hospital after the incident and were injured.
Antonigasse also had to be closed during the operation, which lasted until 4:20 am.
