After Hamas terror: US funds for UNRWA blocked until March 2025

Date:

As reported, the Palestinian aid agency UNRWA, which has come under criticism since the major attack by the terrorist organization Hamas, is on the brink of collapse. It has now become known that the US government has blocked funding for the aid organization until March 2025.

This is evident from media reports that quote two people familiar with the case. Israel accuses UNRWA of some of its employees being involved in the October 7 attack or supporting the radical Islamist Hamas. As a result, several states stopped funding UNRWA. But some are transferring money again.

US funds are now flowing to other UN agencies
Previously, the US government paid between $300 and $400 million per year to UNRWA. According to previous information from a US government spokesperson, the US government plans to send these funds to other UN agencies, such as the UNICEF Children’s Fund, which could use them to finance aid in the Gaza Strip.

Hunger threatens
Because these are also desperately needed. The United Nations has been warning for weeks that there is a risk of famine in Gaza. The official classification as famine means that at least 20 percent of the population is affected by an extreme lack of food. Aid agencies report enormous difficulties in gaining access to the closed area, especially in the north. Several countries have begun delivering aid to Gaza by sea and air. The German air force also dropped relief supplies. However, according to the UN, this is not a sufficient alternative to aid deliveries by truck.
