Amsterdam wants to teach tourists how to behave

Date:

Amsterdam combats the excesses of mass tourism with restrictions and bans. A quiz is intended to familiarize visitors with the new etiquette rules before they start their journey.

The English-language question-and-answer game aims to explore visitors’ motivations for visiting Amsterdam – whether for a honeymoon, bachelorette party, shopping trips or party experiences.

“Amsterdam Rules” explains rules
Over the course of the game, “Amsterdam Rules” explains to users through targeted questions and answers what is not allowed in the city and how to behave appropriately. For example, those who plan to sleep in the car are informed about the ban and the associated fines and high parking costs.

Pub crawls, joints and alcohol are not allowed on the streets
“Would you like a tour of the Red Light District?” is another question. Anyone who thinks this is a tempting offer and clicks yes will be disappointed. Such tours are no longer permitted. Anyone who says they want to party until five in the morning is rejected again. The bars close at 2pm. An organized pub crawl instead? Also prohibited. Strolling around the city with a beer or joint in hand, you guessed it, that is also prohibited.

City dispels clichés
Buying drugs on the street is prohibited, the dealers sell counterfeit drugs, drugs are unhealthy and there is also a risk of a fine. And if you consistently click on everything that sounds a bit forbidden in the question game for long enough, you will be advised: “Too bad, given your preferences, Amsterdam may not offer the experience you are looking for. Read the guide to find out why.”

The quiz follows an online campaign launched last year to discourage young alcohol and drug addicted tourists, mainly from Britain, from visiting. After a smoking ban was imposed in the center, the city council is now planning to move the red light district from the center.

These initiatives are intended to improve the quality of life of the local population and reduce the negative impact of mass tourism.
