A Greek fighter jet crashed into the sea during a training flight on Wednesday afternoon. The pilot was able to escape via the ejection seat and was taken to a Greek Air Force hospital as a precaution. Eyewitnesses spoke of an opened parachute.
According to the air force, the accident took place in the region of the uninhabited Sporades island of Psathoura, near the tourist islands of Alonissos, Skpelos and Skiathos. Initially, nothing was known about the cause of the crash. Most of the Greek Air Force consists of F-16 jets, as in this case. The pilots are generally considered very experienced.
According to military sources, the pilot was able to escape via the ejection seat on Wednesday. A Greek naval frigate, two helicopters and a coast guard boat were deployed after the crash in the North Aegean Sea.
