A wet snow avalanche hit a slope on the Innsbruck Nordkette on Tuesday afternoon. Because it was not clear whether anyone was buried there, the Alpine police and mountain rescue units started a search.
The wet snow avalanche was released below the avalanche barrier on the Innsbruck Nordkette at about 2,000 meters above sea level around 1:40 p.m. and descended on ski slope 6a below. It could not be ruled out that people had been buried under the masses of snow. That is why the Nordkettebahn piste rescue service alerted the emergency services.
Everything clear after a thorough search
The police helicopter, two emergency medical helicopters, the Alpine police and mountain rescue then responded. They searched the approximately 50 meter wide avalanche cone with probes and a sniffer dog, but could not find anyone. After about two hours the all-clear was given.
According to the police, the avalanche was caused by the weather conditions: bright sunlight combined with slope fog.
