Graz residents transfer case – Hailstorm AUA: investigation now back in Lower Austria

Date:

The horror hailstorm of an AUA Airbus with flight number OS434 on June 9 also worries the justice department. Was it negligence? The investigation has now been moved from the Graz public prosecutor’s office to Lower Austria.

The images of the AUA plane with the completely damaged window and the broken nose went around the world. The 173 passengers and crew remained unharmed on the flight from Mallorca to Vienna-Schwechat – but the question remains why the plane flew directly into a strong thunderstorm cell. Even the emergency call “Mayday” was made. There is a lot of speculation, for example that the pilot was in the toilet.

The Viennese lawyer Wolfgang List sent a statement of facts to the public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg (Lower Austria) on behalf of two passengers. The accusation concerns negligent endangerment of the public – probably directed against the pilots. The public prosecutor’s office in Korneuburg initially explained that the public prosecutor’s office in Graz was responsible and the file was forwarded. Because the incident took place over eastern Styria.

On Wednesday, Arnulf Rumpold, spokesman for the Graz public prosecutor’s office, said the case had been “returned” to his colleagues in Lower Austria. Local jurisdiction had proven to be incorrect. Now it is the turn of the prosecutors in Korneuburg again.
