Animal swallowed core – dog dead: lawsuit against vet after wrong diagnosis

Date:

A Viennese vet simply gave a small terrier an injection, even though he should have undergone surgery. The owner of the deceased animal now wants the punishment for the misdiagnosis to be proven by an autopsy report.

“For some people, the death of a dog may not mean any drama,” says Yana Glatz, “but for me the world fell apart when I found out that my beloved ‘Stuart’ was no longer alive.” At that time, on December 29. October 2023. The art historian was on a business trip abroad at the time; Before that, she had entrusted her eight-year-old terrier to an acquaintance.

“And although he was, as always up to that point, in very good condition – happy, fit, adventurous – I had of course given her a vet’s number when I handed him over, just to be on the safe side.

Surprising health problems
And really: in the absence of his owner, an emergency arose; ‘Stuart’ suddenly suffered from health problems: ‘As I unfortunately only found out much later, he reportedly vomited several times.’

The dog sitter then contacted the vet who told her; He noticed that the terrier had stomach problems – “and therefore gave him a kind of injection”. The four-legged patient died shortly afterwards.

The shocking findings of the autopsy
“I received this terrible news on the phone,” sobs Yana Glatz. “I was completely confused, incredibly desperate. And I just wanted to go back to Austria.” To see ‘Stuart’ one last time, to pet him: “That’s why his body was put in a cold room.”

When I got home: “I wanted the vet to finally explain what was actually wrong with my dog. He just said succinctly, ‘He had cancer.'” What the art historian couldn’t believe: “I had an autopsy performed on ‘Stuart’.”

Result: The terrier had swallowed a peach pit, which had caused an intestinal obstruction, “hence the vomiting.”

It is also a fact that the animal would have been easy to save if the vet had performed an ultrasound scan of it, discovered the foreign body inside – and then operated on it: “As experts have now assured me, it would but be a little one. It was a routine procedure…”

“He acted completely negligently”
In addition to the deep sadness for her beloved ‘Stuart’, Yana Glatz feels enormous anger – against the vet, “who acted completely negligently in the treatment of my little one.”

Conclusion: “I have instructed my lawyer Herbert Eichenseder to sue him.” For 5,000 euros in compensation.

If the woman gets the money, she wants to donate it to an animal protection organization.
