They got lost on the first part of their walk, but it wasn’t until the return journey that became a truly wrong path. Two elderly hikers had to request ‘air support’ in Upper Austria to get home safely. The rescue was achieved by the aviation police.
A 75-year-old and a 77-year-old, both from Traunkirchen, wanted to climb the Stoderer Dolomitensteig in the municipality of Hinterstoder. But early on, the two of them deviated from the marked path and followed a wooden path up the mountain. Finally, they followed various game trails in the hope of reaching the Hochsteinalm.
Rope rescue necessary
After realizing the mistake, they climbed back into the valley without a path and found themselves in such exposed terrain that they eventually made a distress call. The Hinterstoder mountain rescue service and the Alpine police immediately went to the scene. At the same time the police helicopter was called. Ultimately, the two hikers were freed from their predicament by air police using rope rescue and flown safely into the valley.
