It would actually be a nice idea to celebrate 100 years of Burgenland, but now about a third of the trees have died. Now there’s the blame.
For the anniversary of Burgenland last year in Winden am See, there was a great idea: 100 years to plant 100 trees. Now the fun idea ends with political chatter. The trees – including cherries – were planted in November, but according to ÖVP Deputy Mayor Lisa Portschy a good third has already died.
“Baumallee tote bag”
She sees the responsibility with SPÖ mayor Erwin Preiner. He chose the cheapest trees and the cheapest solution. Moreover, the proposal originally came from the ÖVP. However, Preiner filed an amendment that was largely identical to the ÖVP application. Portschy would also have liked tree sponsors to look after the plants. Now there is a “dead tree avenue”
Trees are being replanted
Preiner dismisses the criticism. The sponsorship planned by the ÖVP should have cost 100 euros per tree. “A little high.” The quality of the plants was also good, they were typical for the region and came from the state forest garden. The trees were also watered and cared for. Preiner blames the fact that some have died from the lack of precipitation in winter and spring. He cannot estimate how many are actually broken. These should be replanted in the fall. “I’ll take care of it myself,” Preiner said.
The decision for the planting campaign was also unanimous. Even though the deputy mayor is apparently already starting the election campaign, he continues to invite people to work together for the benefit of the population rather than change political change, the mayor said.
