At the beginning of the week, the St. Pölten City Council called for a short-term capacity expansion on the St. Pölten to Vienna railway line. But a quick implementation seems difficult. Extra staff must be able to better manage the customer flow in the short term.
Overcrowded trains, angry commuters. As reported, the current situation when traveling by train is not only causing dissatisfaction due to the upcoming Whitsun weekend. The municipality in St. Pölten sees time to act and demands a rapid expansion of capacity on the western route in a resolution to the federal and state governments.
Long-term solutions planned
According to ÖBB, the plan will probably be difficult to implement in the short term. “Everything is working at the moment. We cannot put more on track than there is”, the request of the “Krone” reads. In April alone there was a passenger increase of 14 percent compared to 2019. At the earliest, with the timetable change in December, this was possible. “a fair amount” will be adjusted. The St. Pöltner Greens see a reactivation of abandoned parts of the route as a possible solution. The St. Pölten ÖVP club president Florian Krumböck calls for improvements in quality and service. Apparently there is not good ensured the changed preconditions as a result of cheap tickets.
SPÖ: “Landesrat must order more trains”
Meanwhile, SPÖ traffic spokesman Gerhard Razborcan is hard on the track because of overcrowded trains with the ÖVP. Because travelers across the country have to repeatedly get off the overloaded trains by order of railway staff, he says: “Landesrat Ludwig Schleritzko must wake up. The country is ordering the capacities and apparently has calculated too little.”
