ÖVP Finance Minister Magnus Brunner recently visited Tyrol and visited the editorial office of “Krone” in Innsbruck. In the big interview he talks about René Benko, aid, climate glue and his future.
“Kron”: You recently said that when Germany has a cold, Austria gets the flu and when Germany has the flu, Austria gets pneumonia. Does our economy already have one?
Minister Magnus Brunner: No, of course this saying has some justification because we are very dependent on Germany. Germany is our largest trading partner. But thank goodness we managed to disconnect a bit. In terms of growth forecasts, Germany is on a modest path of 0 to 0.2 percent for 2024. Experts see us growing at 0.5 to 0.6 percent. We have succeeded in achieving decoupling through structural reforms, such as the abolition of cold progression. We must do everything we can to stimulate the economy again and support growth. We are now trying to do that with the construction kit. The last quarter of 2023 showed a decline of ten percent in the construction sector and we must take countermeasures.
