The decision comes months before Paris hosts the Olympic Games.
The French terror alert system has three levels, with the highest level being activated following an attack in France or abroad or when a threat thereof is considered imminent.
It allows for exceptional security measures such as intensified patrols by the armed forces in public places such as train stations, airports and religious sites.
