Suspected torture – terror in Moscow: four men in custody

Date:

Four Tajiks are in custody after the attack on a concert hall in Moscow. According to the court, three of the four suspects have pleaded guilty. At least 137 people were killed in last Friday’s terrorist attack and 97 injured people are still being treated in hospitals.

The injuries suffered varied in severity, the head of the Moscow region’s health administration, Lyudmila Bolatayeva, said on Monday. As reported, armed attackers killed at least 137 people at a concert hall last Friday evening. The fire was opened shortly before the start of the event. A fire broke out in the building and the roof collapsed. The Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Suspect injured
Four suspected men are now in custody (see video above). The court found that three of them had pleaded guilty. One of the Tajiks was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair. Another had a bandage over his right ear, another suspected accomplice had a black eye and a torn plastic bag around his neck. A fourth suspect’s face appeared swollen and he could barely keep his eyes open.

Human rights activists speak of torture
Human rights activists spoke of alleged torture by Russian security forces. “The answer to barbarism should not be barbarism.” Violence and intimidation would also have a negative impact on the investigation. “We have always said and will always say that the value of evidence obtained by security forces through torture is critically low. Instead of the truth, someone usually says what can stop or at least interrupt this torture,” said the “Komanda protiw pytok” (in German: Team against torture).

According to the organization, people are repeatedly tortured in Russia, but usually behind closed doors. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on these reports on Monday. He also said nothing about the background of the attack on the concert hall and instead referred to information from Russian law enforcement authorities.

Victims must be supported
The victims and their relatives must be supported. Russian ruler Vladimir Putin wants to consult with security experts on Monday. Putin and other Russian officials continue to claim that Ukraine is involved in the crime. There is no evidence for that; Ukrainian leaders rejected it. At least 137 people were killed in the attack and 97 injured remained in hospital on Monday.
