Within a few days there was another bloody act in Vienna-Favoriten: in Favoritenstrasse a 28-year-old was attacked with a knife by an unknown person. At the same time, a fight is said to have taken place on Reumannplatz. A knife was also involved here. The long-requested weapons ban zone will be set up here “in the coming days”.
The measure comes after several people were injured, some seriously, in knife attacks in the area last week. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) described the measure as a “first step”.
There are already two weapons ban zones in Vienna
Such zones have already existed since 2019 on the Praterstern in Leopoldstadt and surroundings, as well as on the Danube Canal on parts of Franz-Josefs-Kai. The police may search people in the zones. If anyone is caught, he must surrender his weapons. He also risks an administrative fine.
Karner reiterated that the police want to take decisive action against youth crime. The weapons ban zone is part of a corresponding “package of measures”. A working group is currently working on ways to reduce criminal liability and enforce consequences and sanctions for perpetrators who are not criminally liable.
Work is also underway on a change in the law for a general ban on weapons – especially knives – in public spaces. Political leaders mainly want to remove knives from circulation in public spaces.
“Ensure effective powers”
“Consistent action against youth crime requires measures at various levels,” said the Minister of the Interior. The aim is to give the police efficient powers across the board so that they can better remove knives from circulation.”
