Excitement about bags – the Russians really gave the police officers a gift

Date:

After the fuss over gift bags handed out to Viennese police officers at the Russian embassy, the ‘Krone’ finally revealed the secret about what the Russians actually gave the officers on Tuesday afternoon…

Police were present during the Russian presidential elections on March 17 to ensure security around voting in the embassy. As a thank you there was a gift from the embassy. Three officers from the State Bureau for State Security and Extremism (LSE) and police carried gift bags containing the Russian national coat of arms after leaving the building.

Undesirable impression with a crooked look for the police
As it became known on Tuesday, there would be no misconduct with the gifts. This is also confirmed by a spokesperson for the Vienna State Police Directorate. However, in the future, gifts from Russia will no longer be accepted. According to the spokesperson, this gave an undesirable impression.

That was hidden in the gift
But what was actually hidden in the gift bags? The action does not seem to have been really worth it for the officials: according to information from “Krone”, the gift would consist of a calendar and sweets. Why the officials involved on the ground did not want to comment on the gifts remains uncertain.

Only later was the Directorate of the Vienna State Police able to confirm receipt of gifts upon request. A spokesperson had previously spoken about “paper bags containing items of low value”. In the future, officials were still encouraged to refuse.
