Pope Francis appears to have deteriorated significantly in recent years and has lost much of his former energy, Pope biographer Austen Ivereigh analyzes. How can this be reconciled with the leadership of the Catholic Church?
“He always had a huge drive and a lot of pressure, that is no longer the case. He has become much calmer,” said the British author in the new edition of the podcast “Himmelklar” according to Kathpress. However, Ivereigh assures that the pope’s ability to lead the church is not in danger.
This distinguishes Francis from his predecessor John Paul II, who was seriously physically disabled in the last years of his life due to Parkinson’s disease. However, if such restrictions are imposed, Francis is prepared to give up his office, according to the biographer. “That is Benedict’s legacy
Pontifex wants to decide of his own free will
However, Ivereigh currently sees no concrete signs of Francis’ impending resignation, despite some health concerns. “On the other hand, I also know that it is most important for him to make decisions of his own free will and in complete freedom. So when the time comes to resign, none of us will likely see it coming.”
The British journalist is the author of three books on Francis, the biographies “The Great Reformer” (2014) and “Wounded Shepherd” and most recently “First Belong to God” (2024), which deals with Francis’ spiritual practices and for the Pope himself wrote the foreword. He is also co-author of Francis’ book “Dare to Dream” (2020).
