For a current test, packaged salads from the supermarket or discounter were checked. They were tested in the laboratory for food germs such as bacteria, mold and yeast. The appearance, taste, smell, texture and color of the products were also assessed. As in the past five years, the complaint rate was almost 40 percent. Only one product was convincing.
As the test shows, good quality is available for little money. The S-Budget test winner not only scored points with its sensory and microbiological test results, but also with its low price of 50 cents per 100 grams. For comparison: the price of the other salads was between 50 cents and 2.19 euros per 100 grams.
Also four other salads with acceptable test results
Four other products were found to be in good condition overall, but showed minor defects in terms of smell, taste and/or texture when tasted. In addition, the microbiological examination of these salads also revealed a yeast contamination. In one case the mold limit was exceeded.
Three products “not suitable for human consumption”
Three salads were found to be “not suitable for human consumption” based on microbiological results. The measured bacterial counts for Bacillus cereus were above the warning value recommended by the German Association for Hygiene and Microbiology. In general, this group of bacteria includes several species.
Mold warning value exceeded
In addition, one of these mixed salads turned out to contain mold that exceeded the warning value, as shown by the AK test. After washing thoroughly with water, these salads could also be eaten without hesitation, despite the lack of instructions on the packaging.
How to properly handle ready-made salads
Even if there is no indication on the packaging that the lettuce needs to be washed, or if the packaging contains inscriptions such as ‘ready to eat and washed’, bagged salads should be thoroughly washed again under running water before consumption. And last but not least: you have to trust your own senses. If the salad smells of yeast, fermented, sour or stale when you open it, or if it already has brown spots, it is better to put it in the container instead of on the plate.
