Anyone who goes on holiday to Italy this summer will soon have to comply with stricter traffic rules – or risk a hefty fine.
No more fun: Italy’s Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday adopted a traffic reform that provides for tougher penalties for drivers caught using mobile phones or under the influence of drugs, including high fines and points deducted from their driver’s license.
Using your smartphone is expensive
Although the reform still needs to be ratified by the Senate, it is already causing a stir: motorists now risk fines of up to 1,697 euros if motorists are caught using their smartphones. In addition, eight to ten driving license points will be deducted and the driving license will be revoked for a period of fifteen days to two months.
Anyone caught driving with a mobile phone again within two years risks a driving license withdrawal for three months, a fine of 2,588 euros and the deduction of ten driving license points.
The penalties for illegal parking are multiplied
Caution is also required when parking illegally: illegal parking in a disabled parking space will cost 990 euros in the future instead of 330 euros. The fines for parking in bus lanes or at stops will be increased from 165 to 660 euros.
