23 year old – Mellau: Help came too late for the missing hiker

Date:

A 23-year-old who had been missing since Tuesday was found dead near Alpe Nesselfluh in Vorarlberg on Thursday. He was under a ledge.

The mountain rescuers spent two days searching for a young man who set out around 1:30 PM on Tuesday. After he still had not returned on Wednesday, his disappearance was reported to the police in Bezau, starting the rescue chain.

However, fog, rain and snowfall significantly hampered the search during the day. Searches by helicopter were no longer possible in the afternoon hours. This was continued by 15 mountain rescue people and two personal sniffer dogs in three groups.

Search aborted
Due to the terrible snowfall and the exposed location, the search party had to call off this operation in the evening hours.

In much better conditions, the rescuers – including the crew of the police helicopter “Dragonfly” and 18 mountain rescuers from the local locations Mellau and Bizau, a sniffer dog and eight members of the Alpine Task Force – resumed the search at 6 am. o’clock on Thursday morning.

About two hours later, the missing person was found about 230 meters east of Alpe Nesselfluh under a ridge at an altitude of 1,290 metres. The local doctor who participated in the search could only determine that the young man was dead.
