Another serious bus accident occurred in Germany on Friday evening. This time, a group of vocational training students had an accident on their way back from a trip to England. Their double-decker bus left the highway near Werl in North Rhine-Westphalia, drove into a ditch and fell on its side. The result: more than twenty injuries.
According to police, 21 of the 60 passengers were injured and one person suffered serious injuries. It was said that no one’s life was in danger.
On Wednesday morning, a coach on the A9 near Leipzig left the road and fell on its side – but with much worse consequences: four people were killed. As with the new accident, no other vehicles were involved according to current knowledge. In both cases, the investigation into the cause of the accident is still ongoing.
Bus overturned in the ditch
According to police, the students from the vocational school in Warburg on the border with Hesse who died in the accident were young adults. It is still unclear whether only students or supervisors were injured. According to police, the driver of the bus was unhurt and escaped in horror despite the windshield being smashed.
After the accident, the A44 from the Unna Ost exit towards Werl was completely closed on one side. The badly damaged bus had to be repaired before it could be saved. In addition to the fire brigade, a rescue helicopter was also present.
Four dead in Flixbus accident
In the similar accident on Wednesday on the A9 in Saxony, a double-decker bus from travel company Flixbus with 52 passengers and two drivers ended up on the grass verge and overturned on its side. Four people were killed, six were seriously injured and 29 were slightly injured. The driver is under investigation for negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm.
Serious bus accidents have occurred repeatedly in Germany in recent years. Yet buses are one of the relatively safe means of transport. According to accident statistics, they are relatively rarely involved in traffic accidents with physical injuries.
